snackLets Provides Next-Generation Snacking
by Andy Coffaro, Sigona's Farmers Market, July 19, 2012

Americans have long turned snacking into an art form. Let’s be honest here. If snacking were an Olympic sport, we’d be the favorites to bring home gold in London this summer.

The problem, of course, is the poor snacking choices we typically make. From processed cookies to greasy chips, there’s a reason why 36% of Americans are obese. Thank goodness we have Gina Song and Laura Woo, co-founders of snackLets, working tirelessly to create one of the most nutritious and best-tasting snacks you’ll ever devour. To achieve this, they naturally started with … kale?

“Both Laura and I are super passionate about food,” said co-founder Gina Song from their headquarters in Menlo Park. “Whether it’s preparing it, eating it or even watching the Food Network for hours, we’ve always gravitated toward food.”

These lifelong friends that have known each other since their middle schools days in Korea had a mutual friend in Los Angeles making amazing vegan kale chips they adored. Although Laura was in finance at the time and Gina was running her own doggie daycare business, they decided to perfect their own kale-licious recipe and go into business together.

Although only in business since early 2012, snackLets constantly receives praise and compliments from customers that devour their three flavors of kale chips (BBQ Giddy Up!, Double O Cheesy and Spicy Chili-lata). Considering the entire Sigona’s marketing team spent half of a meeting last month scarfing down these delicious bite-sized nuggets of nutrition, it’s not difficult to understand how they’ve come so far in such a short amount of time.

They’re Sneaky Good

American adults aren’t the only ones struggling with obesity. Recent research has childhood obesity rates soaring as high as 20%. snackLets is doing their part to chip away at this frightening stat.

“I have a two year-old boy and he hates any food the color green,” said Laura. “But these have been a huge hit because they taste so good. He eats them by the bag.”

Laura continued, “The kale chips are also really good for him because he’s allergic to milk. Because these are 100% vegan, his favorite flavor is still the cheese.”

For all the parents out there, snackLets Kale Chips are a great way to feel good about your child’s snacking habits. Kale is a superfood loaded with vitamin K, A and C – not to mention fiber. The masterminds at snackLets use a dehydrator to cook the kale at an extremely low temperature to ensure the nutrients don’t burn off. By adding their top-secret spices – and a dash of TLC – you’re presented with an unbelievably tasty snack that’s incredibly good for you. Heck, you can even sprinkle them on your salad for that extra crunch!

Looking Down The Road

When I asked our fearless entrepreneurs if they have any new flavors or products in the works, they said that while they do have a few new snacks hidden up their sleeves, they’re incredibly focused right now on their three flavors of kale chips.

“We do have a lot of fun things in the pipeline, but we want to grow carefully and be smart about it,” said Laura toward the end of our conversation.

For now, the local outfit is focused on provided Bay Area residents with one of the most unique, healthy and flavor-packed snacks on the market. Come snag a bag the next time you’re in the store. We’re positive you’ll love ‘em. (They’re free between July 19-26 when you spend $30 or more in the store.)

And feel free to contact Gina or Laura with any questions and comments. As Gina said, “The great feedback is what keeps us going.”

Review: snackLets Kale Chips!
by Vegan Yack Attack, May 31, 2012

We sent our product over to Vegan Yack Attack to review our kale chips and get an expert's opinion on all things tasty and vegan!  Our flavor profiles did not let us down.  The chips were "...packed with flavor..." with Spicy Chili-lata coming in first place as the blogger's favorite.  Our Spicy Chli-lata was reportedly "so GOOD [that she] had to seriously try [and] stop [her]self from eating the whole bag in one sitting."

snackLets Kale Chip Review
Czech Vegan, May 31, 2012
Forget unhealthy, fried potato chips and dive into awesome raw (rawesome) kale chips from SnackLets!  I love kale and I was thrilled when snackLets sent me their raw kale chips to try.

Giddy up! BBQ
Wow! This flavor rocks! It starts of sweet (due to the dates and sun dried tomatoes) and then it gets hot and smokey, with a hint of cheese. This is a perfectly balanced combination of sweet, spicy and smokey flavors. The the right amount of heat and sweetness with a lovely smokey, cheesy touch.  I ate most of these chips straight out of the bag and sprinkled some on a baked potato and over a salad. Yummy!

Spicy Chili-lata
I was absolutely blown away by the aroma and flavor of the "Spicy Chili-lata" ! The heat from dried habanero chili pepper was mellowed down by the amazing creaminess of cashew nuts and brewer's yeast. It was very cheesy, I would compare the taste to a parmesan cheese or cream cheese in a way. I ate all the larger pieces and sprinkled the leftover crumbs over my brown rice pasta for a vegan parmesan experience and extra nutrients. I could not get enough of this flavor and I will be buying it soon.

Double O Cheesy
This is a lovely cheesy flavor. It is mild and a little smokey without being spicy so I can see this as a great choice for kids and people who don't like spicy foods. Miso and tahini contribute to the delectable flavor of these kale chips.  I ate these alone and then sprinkled some over a salad.

I did it again
Hungry Hungry Hippie, May 31, 2012
I was really in the mood for a kale salad on the side, but we didn’t have any kale.  I could have just used spinach, but I wasn’t feeling it.  Luckily I had these kale chips on hand. I was really in the mood for a kale salad on the side, but we didn’t have any kale.  I could have just used spinach, but I wasn’t feeling it.  Luckily I had these kale chips on hand.

These kale chips are so good.  They snap off like deliciously fresh, crispy baked greens, and the nutty tahini coating makes them melt in your mouth like buttah. These kale chips are so good.  They snap off like deliciously fresh, crispy baked greens, and the nutty tahini coating makes them melt in your mouth like buttah.

I know kale chips are easy to make (I’ve done it a few times), but they are so much better when the professionals do it. I know kale chips are easy to make (I’ve done it a few times), but they are so much better when the professionals do it.

And snackLets does it oh-so-right.

And they are local too (shout out to Studio City!?!).

And as you can see they are vegan, raw, and FODMAPs friendly (no garlic!).

Note to self: get smoked paprika.

Aside from the few handfuls Kyle swiped, I ate the entire bag in one serving.  I couldn’t stop!  Yummmm…

If you can find snacklets near you, try the, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Kale Me Crazy: Other Chips Pale in Comparison
Spencer's Market, May 7, 2012
Kale may be the new "it" veggie, but this hearty leaf is destined to become a classic. Some like it in salads or even in smoothies, but the kale "chip" will win over even the pickiest palate. Coated in a cashew-based batter then dehydrated to preserve their nutrients, these kale chips from Snacklets are a crunchy and satisfying way to get your daily dose of greens.

Let's Snack on snackLets: A Kale Chip Company. A Review
OC Food & Fitness, March 22, 2012
Every industry has its trends, their new latest and greatest. And the health industry is certainly no different. This couldn’t have been more apparent than at Natural Products Expo West here in Orange County, CA a couple weeks back. One of the ingredients that seemed to really jump out at me – because it was absolutely everywhere! – was kale.

Kale has really been brought to the mainstream over the past year or so. It’s now made or used in everything from bars, to snacks, to energy drinks, to supplements. But one of the most popular ways to get your daily dose of kale most certainly has to be kale chips. Touted as the healthy potato chip alternative, these things really are great. And one of my new favorites has to be those from SnackLets.  100% Vegan. 100% Raw. 100% Awesome.

The Product: snackLets is a company that was started by two friends who have a passion for eating, and making, snacks that taste just as good as they are good for you. With their first line of products being that of Kale Chips, I’d say that these two women hit the nail right on the head.

snackLets currently come in three awesome flavors: Spicy Chili-lata (my favorite because I am obsessed with all things spicy), BBQ Giddy Up!, and Double Oh Cheesy. As previously mentioned, all products are 100% vegan and 100% raw, with no added chemicals or preservatives.

Nutrition-Wise: Cooked using a dehydrator, these crunchy little nibblets are so addicting, that eating a half a bag is way too easy! I’d probably advise against this though, due to the fact that they contain approximately 150 calories per 1 oz serving, 70 of which are from fat. With that said, both the calories and fat content are mainly due to the nuts used to give these chips their delicious coating and flavor, making it a healthy and satisfying snack option. You won’t find any added oils or fats here!

Moreover, thanks to the nutritional powerhouse known as kale which make these chips what they are, you will find a multitude of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and even protein in each bag. In fact, kale is known for its powerful antioxidant properties, including its ability to ward off cancer and provide anti-inflammatory benefits, something your typical potato chip certainly can’t brag about.
Where to Buy: SnackLets can currently be purchased from a very select few stores in California (see list here). However, their overwhelming deliciousness is sure to have them in a store near you very soon!

Synopsis: snackLets Kale Chips have definitely found a new home on my pantry’s shelf. And although they are pretty pricy, costing you about $7.50 per bag, it’s hard to put a price on good health, especially when it tastes so great!

Gourmet Stalker's Kale Chip Review at NPE 2012
Gourmet Stalker, March 13, 2012

So over the weekend I helped out a friend at the Natural Products Expo West, in Anaheim, CA.  It was a mad house!  Our product (snackLets Kale Chips) turned out to be the buzz of the entire trade show.  As we were the "New Kids on the Block," we made quite an impression on the community.  Hour after hour we were slammed with buyers/retailers, brokers, wholesalers, press, etc.  It was tiring and absolutely glorious.  SnackLets is such a young company, and to find such a great love from the food community, was quite a relief on that it will be a successful company.  The biggest star of our booth were our Kale Chips!  The flavor is that which will knocks your socks off!  At first, the flavor is good and tasty, but as your walk away, the flavor profile begins to build on your pallet, enhancing with "sabor" and leaving you craving for more of that deliciousness.  I know you think I'm bias, but I fell in love with these snacks prior to becoming friends with the developer.  There are three flavors: Double Cheese, Spicy Chili-lata, and BBQ.  Get this, not are they absolutely delightful, they are "100% Vegan, 100% Raw, 100% Awesome"

So if you like Kale Chips, check us out, taste our kale chips, and fall in love with snackLets
